Buildings are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions come from “embodied carbon” in building materials and construction, renovation, or demolition processes. Additional emissions result from ongoing use, as on-site fuel is burned for heating, water, and cooking, while cooling and refrigeration chemicals may escape. Buildings consume over half of all electricity, amplifying emissions from upstream electricity generation.
